Turbocharger Identification

Locating the turbocharger identification number is the first step in the replacement process. The identification number is typically found on a small metal badge riveted to the compressor housing or center cartridge of the turbocharger. Its also common on late model turbochargers to find the identification number etched in the compressor housing cover.

Identification Plate
Name plates can have more than one number listed depending on the OE manufacturer.  Typically turbochargers will have the OEM turbocharger number such as Garrett, Borg Warner and the vehicle manufacturer replacement part number such as Caterpillar, Cummins. It common to find missing or damaged identification plates and in some cases such as aftermarket performance turbochargers the identification number is removed.
Below are examples of common name plates found on original equipment manufacturer (OEM) turbochargers and aftermarket replacement turbos.
